Matauri Bay House

The Studio Design + Architecture team were appointed as architect and interior designer for a Kiwi ‘bach’ in Matauri Bay situated just north of the Bay of Islands. The brief was to design a relaxed, fully furnished and fitted-out house with three double bedrooms and a bunkroom, double garage, large indoor-outdoor living and storage. The house sleeps 12 and needed three bathrooms and an outdoor shower. Large underground water storage tanks were installed and several skylights and a clerestory in the living space ensured a light, fresh feel to the house. The floors are polished concrete with underfloor heating and large custom rugs. The furnishings are comfortable but contemporary without being too hard edged. The ceilings are a combination of cedar and painted plasterboard. The timber wall, ceiling and joinery finishes add a feeling of warmth and texture to the space.

Warmth and texture

The exterior finishes were stained plywood, zinc cladding and powder-coated steel and aluminium with UV-rated glazing. The house nestles into the hillside at the back and spills down gracefully towards the sea. The outdoor areas are louvered to allow another outdoor covered space to sit.

Studio Design + Architecture’s team were responsible for a full procurement package encompassing every aspect of the residence from furniture through to bed linen and kitchen appliances.
